Beyond Strategy

Creating A Winning Organization

THE MASTER COURSE

Workshop 1: In the Ways of the Eagle: Re-inventing the Non Profit: A stimulating workshop that seeks to open the minds of participants to the opportunities provided by modern technology and the evolving workplace. With changing working habits, emergence of generation Y, rapid travel and communication, cheaper equipment and technology, the face of the workplace is changing. While it has brought its challenges, it has also created new opportunities for the non profit. This inspirational session is for those who want ideas on how to capitalise on the emerging scenario to re-invent their non profit organisation. It will show you the opportunities that are available to broaden your beneficiary and geographical reach while minimising overheads. It’s one session you do not want to miss.

Workshop 2: The Ultimate Strategist: Establishing Winning Partnerships and Consortiums: Many non profits are used to running their own show, even if it means duplicating activities. To them, working with the competition just increases the risk of their stealing your donors and having to share the glory and funds. Some of the non profits that have embraced real partnerships and consortiums have realised their potential or the strategic benefits that they offer. Others however, have been forced into them by donors or necessity. Yet partnerships and consortiums can be a real asset in resource mobilisation. The strategic fundraiser knows how to leverage their strengths and weaknesses within winning teams that mobilise more money for everyone. They have learnt how to use their partnerships to mobilise resources from donors they themselves would never have been able to access or benefit from. This eye opening session will show you how you can capitalise on allies and competition to increase your own financial kitty.

Workshop 3: The Trojan Horse: Getting Donors to Fundraise for You. Have you ever got donors to fundraise for you? The ultimate strategists have learnt how to inspire staff of donor organisations to do the fundraising from them, like the legendary Trojan horse. Others will capitalise on donor round tables amongst other tools that get donors talking to other donors on their behalf. Donors have their own language and if you are able to get donors to fundraise from you, the sky is the limit. They can apply more pressure and call in more favours from other donors that you would not be able to do on your own. This session is about playing Trojan – getting donors to do the fundraising on your behalf. It will show you how you can capitalise on some of your donors in ways you never thought possible.

Workshop 4: The Art of War: Beating Your Fundraising Competition to the Prize: You have heard of the art of war for the military. Corporate bodies too have their version. What about non profit organisations? As a fundraiser, you are always competing to win the funds that you need to run your activities against increasingly sophisticated competition. The stakes are high for everyone in the game. The funds are not only critical for maintaining the operations of the organisation, but growing and expanding activities. This workshop is about the art of war for the resource mobilizer. It will take you down an enlightening journey of the principles of war in the resource mobilisation market place. It will equip you with the tools that you need to outwit the competition and win the ultimate prize.

MAIN COURSE (1)

Mini-Course 1: Dawn of a New Era:Navigating the Waters of the New Funding Dispensation

Plenary The New Kids on the Block: Fundraising in the New World Order: The world as we know it is changing. Old economic powers are seeing their resources and influence weakened with new ones increasingly flexing their muscles. For example in 2011, Brazil overtook the UK as the Worlds sixth largest economy. The next decade will see China overtake the USA as the world’s largest economy.
Things have not been helped by the financial crisis in Europe that have seen the economies of Greece, Spain, Italy and Ireland face financial duress. The emerging scenarios have major implications on the resource mobilisation environment. Mini-Course 2: Fundraising in the 21st Century: Finding the Elusive Donors

Workshop 1:
The Ways of the Hunter: Catching Donors in the Fundraising Jungle: Resource mobilisation is like hunting with the fundraiser being the hunter. The donor is the prey while the competition are the predators. Just like in nature, they come in different forms with lions, hyena’s, leopards, cheaters, jackals, wild dogs amongst others. The fundraising has to scan the environment, identify the prey, strategize and hunt it down. It is not always successful and the prey sometimes gets away. At other times, it’s lost to a better and bigger hunter. While some fundraisers have a great track record, others never seem to catch the prized prey.  Each fundraiser has their fundraising style. This workshop will enable you identify which kind of predator you are and how you can best use it to bring the prey home. It will be an insightful and enlightening workshop that will increase your effectiveness as a hunter and success rate in getting donors.

His romantic escapes were legendary, creating a reputation that still fascinates many to this day. Every fundraiser wants to charm their prospective donors into giving them money. In essence, the task is not very different from the young man trying to win over the love of his life. The workshop will show you how to write project concept notes and proposals that win over donors ...... and gets them to establishing long term relationships with your organisation.

This workshop will help you develop effective strategies that support on-line fundraising.

Workshop 2: The Road Less Travelled: Tapping the Riches of the Individual Donor:
While mobilising resources from individuals is common for non profits in western countries, it is less popular in Africa. Non profits in the continent largely rely on institutional donors to mobilise funds. Yet the amount of money raised by churches demonstrates the great potential of this source of funds. The Kenyans for Kenya campaign also raised large amounts of money from individuals within a four week time frame demonstrating the large potential of this source of funding. Technology backed by mobile based payment solutions have opened up new opportunities that can be tapped by savvy organisation interested in diversifying their sources of income. Corporate bodies often have large branch and distribution networks that can be of use in reaching their consumers. By working with them, non profits can capitalise on their credibility, customer base, reach and loyalty to mobilise resources for their work. The Kenyan’s for Kenya Campaign demonstrated just how much organisation can raise if they work with the right corporate entities. This workshop will enlighten you on the opportunities available in working with corporate entities to mobilise resources on your behalf. It will show you how to establish the relationships you need to capitalise on this source of funding.

Workshop 2: The Mustard Seed: Starting Your Organisation on a Shoe String Budget: The mustard tree is the basis of a parable told by Jesus over 2000 years ago.
